Following on from our article on the emerging trend of The Internet of Things, we will know look at the emerging trend of Immersive Content and show you what to keep an eye out for in the exploding word of Virtual Reality.
With Microsoft’s recent announcement of the HoloLens, a device which allows the user to project holograms into the world around them. This already shows that 2015 is shaping up to be the year of Immersive Content and Virtual Reality.
Microsoft’s HoloLens will allow you to project holograms into your surroundings and no longer means the way which you interact with technology is limited by the size of your screen and the hardware you use.
A brief summary of the internet of things
Microsoft is obviously a big game player in the world of Immersive Content, but are there any other companies to look out for in 2015? Here we present the 3 biggest players to look out for in 2015 in the Immersive Content space.
- Facebook – Facebook may be known as the king of the social network, but with their recent acquisition of Oculus Rift for $2 Billion Dollars, this shows that they are comfortable leaving this space. Oculus Rift are a company that focuses on developing Virtual Reality headsets that enable gamers to fully immerse themselves in the game. But will Facebook keep Oculus within the gaming industry, or choose to expand them to their already massive user base. Only 2015 will tell.
- D-Box Technologies – With many companies such as Facebook and Microsoft focusing on the “what we see” end of things. D- Box is a company concerned with a different end of the immersive content spectrum. D-Box recently showcased their brand new technology which is focused on the “what we feel” side of things. Already existing in 4-D cinemas, 2015 could be the year that D-Box finally moves into the home.
- Go-Pro – The Company known for its red bull fuelled adrenaline junkie videos. Only last week, Go-Pro announced its entry into the world of immersive content. With a live streaming unit now built into its latest test models. It is now possible for Go-Pro alongside content producers to broadcast live 3D first person views from any sport. This is set to revolutionise the world of sports broadcasters, and 2015 will be the year we start seeing it on our screens.
So what do these technologies produced by the Microsoft amongst many others mean for the world of Virtual Reality and Immersive Content, and how is this going to change the way you consume media?
Unlike our previous post in which we discussed the internet of things, which has existed since the early 2000s and is only starting to gain traction this year. Immersive Content is something which has only existed in Science Fiction for the most part. With the large amount of Immersive Content technologies being established by two of the largest tech companies – Facebook and Microsoft, this shows that this is no passing fad and 2015 is set to be the year where Immersive Content finally starts to enter the home in a real tangible way.
