Efiko app, according to the founders, seeks to inspire self-learning by engaging students to take charge of their own learning and celebrate their successes.

“Efiko is a mobile social quiz platform designed to enhance learning through self-assessment,” they said. “[It was] designed to promote and reward academic excellence among secondary school students in Nigeria.”

The app’s short tutorials and quizzes, based on the Nigerian national academic curriculum at the secondary level, founders said are designed to stimulate and personalize the learning experience outside of school. The app was developed through CcHUB’s Tech-In-Education Program which addresses the need for personalization and mass individualization of learning tools.

They said: “Efiko was initially tested in 8 schools in Surulere, Mainland, Apapa and Yaba area (Lagos State) between Nov 5 – Dec 19, 2012 with the support of stakeholders in the education sector: students, schools management (principals), teachers and state education administrators (from Lagos Education District IV).”

Key features of the app include:

  • Topical based learning with tutorials: Students learn as they are taught according to the National Curriculum.
  • Instant scoring and ranking with a leader-board: Students are challenged to do better when they see their current scores and ranks as well as that of their peers.
  • Social based learning: Peer-to-peer engagement makes learning fun for students. Students can challenge each other on social media to become top student in different subjects. Students can also invite friends and challenge friends to take same quiz.
